Vintage Japanese Go Set, Complete, Keyaki, 1960
Beautiful vintage Japanese Go set, entirely handcrafted from solid keyaki (zelkova) wood. The thick board rests on four finely sculpted legs.
Dimensions: height 26.5 cm, width 45 cm, depth 40.5 cm. Weight: 16 kg.
The playing surface with grid lines is in very good condition, with only light signs of use. The warm honey tone of the wood and its subtle grain give the board a calm, elegant presence.
The board comes with two wooden gokei (bowls) with matching lids. One bowl holds the white stones, carved from clam shell with beautiful natural colour variations; the other contains the black stones in glossy slate. The set is complete with the correct number of stones (181 white and 180 black).
On the underside of the board is a Japanese ink inscription stating that the board was “carefully made” and bearing the date Shōwa 35, corresponding to 1960.
An exceptional piece for the experienced Go player who values authentic Japanese craftsmanship, as well as for the beginner who wants to play with high-quality equipment from the start.
At the same time, it is a sculptural interior object with a serene, almost meditative presence in any room.
