Vintage Kokeshi with Braids by Shige, 1970s

This kokeshi doll was designed by Japanese maker Shige (茂作), whose mark is stamped on the bottom of the base. Known for his elegant forms and minimalist detailing, this piece is a fine example of his stylized approach. The doll is in very good condition.

The doll features a serene, minimal face with delicate brushwork and a calm, introspective expression. Particularly notable are the black braided pigtails on either side of the head — a rare and playful detail that adds personality and charm. The slender body is painted in a warm reddish-brown hue, contrasting beautifully with the natural wood grain of the lower section.
