Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi – Japan, 1960s
This playful and irresistibly kawaii sōsaku kokeshi is a charming example of the more expressive, creative style within the Japanese kokeshi tradition. The maker is unknown and the piece is unsigned, but the craftsmanship and personality speak for themselves.
Dimensions: height 15 cm, diameter 6 cm.
The doll features a large, round head with a simple yet endearing face, painted with big black eyes, rosy cheeks, and delicate hairlines along the sides. Atop the head is a carved element resembling an acorn cap — a subtle nod to nature. What makes this kokeshi truly unique are the carved, forward-facing little hands in a cute, praying or pleading pose.
The body is slightly curved and wrapped with a decorative yellow cord finished with tassels.
The warm wood tones and soft patina give the figure a natural, friendly appearance.
