Vintage Sōsaku Kokeshi by Sato Suigai, 1970s
Elegant vintage sōsaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai, born in Gunma in 1920. The wooden doll has a refined form and wears a warm red kimono, richly decorated with peonies and an asanoha motif — 麻の葉 — the traditional Japanese hemp leaf pattern, often associated with growth and protection.
Dimensions: height 32 cm, diameter 10 cm.
Sato Suigai began his training at a young age under Suiun Komuro and became an award-winning artist within the creative kokeshi tradition. His work is appreciated for its combination of gentle expression, decorative strength and classic Japanese motifs.
