Rare Japanese Archive Cabinet with 40 Books on Noh Theater (1929, Lithograph Print).
This authentic Japanese cabinet from 1929 houses a collection of 40 books dedicated to traditional Noh theater.
The books are produced using lithographic printing and are carefully stored in a wooden cabinet with eight compartments, each containing five books. The cabinet features a removable panel with a detailed overview of the contents, as well as a drawer at the bottom.
Dimensions and condition: height 52 cm, width 38.5 cm, depth 27 cm. The condition is excellent, making it a well-preserved piece.
The books cover various themes, including:
- Buddhism and Shintoism, exploring religious and philosophical influences on Noh theater.
- Philosophy, examining the spiritual and ethical foundations of Noh.
- Martial arts and the samurai, highlighting the connection between Noh and samurai culture.
The publication is titled "昭和版 實生流謡曲" (Shōwa-ban Jitsushōryū Yōkyoku), referring to a specialized edition of Noh chants. This was not a commercial release but was likely intended for internal use within a Noh theater troupe or an exclusive cultural circle.
This edition was written by the 17th generation of the Hōshō family.
The Hōshō family (寶生家) is one of the most prestigious lineages in Noh theater, specifically within the Hōshō school, one of the five major Noh traditions.
