Set of Three Takuboku Kokeshi – Ishii Seirō, 1970s–80s, Japan
A refined trio of Japanese sōsaku kokeshi by Ishii Seirō (1929–2007), bringing together traditional woodcarving and the poetry of Ishikawa Takuboku.
Dimensions: tallest H 30 cm, smallest H 17 cm. Diameter approx. 7 cm.
The three wooden dolls are distinguished by their elegant, deep-black silhouettes and beautifully stylized heads. Delicate hair ornaments and striking spiral-shaped patterns painted on the crowns give each piece a particularly decorative character.
The bodies feature meticulously carved poems by the celebrated Japanese poet Ishikawa Takuboku (1886–1912), taken from his poetry collection 'A Handful of Sand'. The verses evoke the mountains of his homeland, the banks of the Kitakami River and the historic castle of Morioka.
The two largest kokeshi are further adorned with dynamic, finely carved horse motifs. The warm, natural wood tones of the engravings create a beautiful contrast against the deep-black surface.
The undersides bear calligraphic signatures by Ishii Seirō. One example also retains its original Japanese label.
The red inscriptions on the reverse refer to Morioka and the nearby Tsunagi Onsen hot springs.
In lovely vintage condition, with a natural patina and minor signs of age and use.
An exceptionally harmonious and collectible ensemble, rarely offered as a complete trio.
The combination of poetry, intricate carvings and sculptural forms makes these kokeshi a remarkable example of Japanese folk art, with a timeless, understated elegance.
