Set of Two Tsugaru Kokeshi – Murai Misao, 1960s, Japan
A harmonious pair of traditional Japanese kokeshi by Murai Misao (1912–1980), originating from the Tsugaru tradition in Aomori Prefecture.
Dimensions: tallest H 41 cm, smallest H 30 cm. Diameter of both: 8 cm.
These two handcrafted wooden dolls are distinguished by their elegant silhouettes and expressive traditional decoration. The warm, honey-toned wood contrasts beautifully with the bold accents of deep black, red and green.
The taller kokeshi features a particularly graceful, turned silhouette, with a narrow waist and softly rounded contours. The smaller example has a more slender, gently flared form. Both are decorated with delicate horizontal bands and expressive, stylised floral motifs, including the distinctive chrysanthemum patterns associated with the Tsugaru tradition.
Murai Misao was born in Ōwani, an important centre of traditional kokeshi production. He learned the craft from his father, Murai Fukutarō, and developed a recognisable painting style within the Tsugaru tradition.
Both kokeshi bear the artist's handwritten Japanese signature on their undersides.
In beautiful vintage condition, with a warm, natural patina.
An exceptionally decorative and collectible ensemble that reflects the expressive beauty of traditional Japanese woodcraft. With their sculptural forms and refined craftsmanship, these kokeshi make a striking interior accent, combining artistic character with timeless elegance.
