Sōsaku Kokeshi ‘Aki’, Sato Kouson, 1970s, Japan
An elegant Japanese sōsaku kokeshi from the 1970s by artist Sato Kouson (佐藤香村).
Dimensions: H 30 cm × Ø 8 cm.
This handcrafted wooden kokeshi features a slender, cylindrical silhouette and striking decoration inspired by the Japanese autumn. Deep burgundy tones are combined with vibrant accents of vermilion red, ochre yellow and green. Expressive brushstrokes, layered colours and delicate botanical motifs give the surface a beautiful painterly quality.
The large, rounded head, with its glossy black hairstyle and small traditional topknot, creates an elegant contrast with the rich colours of the body.
Sato Kouson was one of the female artists associated with Japan’s sōsaku kokeshi movement. Working from her studio in Fukushima, she developed a distinctive style characterised by natural motifs, rich colours and expressive hand-painted decoration.
The underside bears her Japanese signature 香村 (Kouson).
In beautiful vintage condition, with a warm patina and gentle signs of age.
A highly appealing collectible piece whose rich colours and elegant design bring warmth and artistic character to any interior.
