Sōsaku Kokeshi ‘Momiji’, Okamoto Usaburō, 1970s, Japan
An elegant Japanese sōsaku kokeshi from the 1970s, created by the renowned workshop of Okamoto Usaburō (1917–2009).
Dimensions: H 30 cm × Ø 8 cm.
This handcrafted wooden kokeshi is distinguished by its slender silhouette and distinctive, deeply ribbed body. The warm brown tones of the wood provide a beautiful backdrop for hand-painted autumn maple leaves in shades of rust red, orange and green, seemingly drifting across the surface.
The generously rounded head, with its dark painted hairstyle, creates a striking contrast with the natural texture of the wood.
The side bears Usaburō’s signature, while the original workshop label remains intact on the underside.
In beautiful vintage condition, with a warm, natural patina and gentle signs of age.
A collectible example of Japanese sōsaku artistry, combining sculptural elegance with rich autumn colours to bring warmth and character to a refined or eclectic interior.
