Japanese Decorative Taiko Drum with Gold Crane Motif, 1960s
This small taiko is a purely decorative object with a bold, celebratory presence.
Dimensions: height 15 cm, diameter 18 cm.
The glossy black surface is richly decorated in gold with cranes flying among pine and bamboo. These are traditional auspicious motifs in Japan: the crane is associated with longevity and good fortune, while pine and bamboo evoke resilience and enduring strength.
The finish is beautifully detailed, with gold-toned metal end caps and a raised “beaded” rim around the edges. One side features an ornate fitting with a ring, finished with a red cord and tassel. You’ll also notice a mitsudomoe emblem, a motif often seen in the context of drums and festival decoration.
In a contemporary interior, it works perfectly as an accent piece on a sideboard, in an open cabinet, or in a tokonoma-inspired setting, where the gold details catch the light against calm materials like wood, linen, and ceramics.
The piece is in very nice condition with natural age wear and light signs of use, consistent with its age and careful storage.
