Small Kamakura-bori Haribako “Peony”, Jewellery Chest, Japan, 1970s.
This compact box is made using the Kamakura-bori carving technique: a deep, dark surface with warm red tones revealed through the carved areas.
Dimensions: height 17 cm, width 19 cm, depth 21 cm.
The exterior features an elegant, repeating hand-carved pattern. The front stands out with a richly carved peony in relief. The motif continues beautifully across the two drawers, giving the piece a harmonious and refined look from the front.
Inside, the drawers reveal a light wood interior that contrasts nicely with the darker exterior. The metal handles show minor wear, consistent with age and use. Overall, the box is in very good condition with normal signs of age.
Versatile in use: ideal as a jewellery box, a sewing box (haribako), or a stylish organiser for stationery and small accessories. A small piece that instantly adds a subtle Japanese accent to your interior.
