Japanese Wooden Dough Bowl, Kibachi, Large Serving Bowl, 1980s

This large Japanese wooden dough bowl, also known as a kibachi, was traditionally used for kneading and working dough (for example for soba or udon).

It is a beautifully and precisely turned piece with a wide rim and a soft, rounded shape that brings an immediate sense of calm to an interior.

The wood grain is especially lively, with fine lines and flowing patterns that continue elegantly across the inside. Based on the grain, the wood is likely tamo (Japanese ash), a species valued for its warm tone and refined figure.

This bowl comes from old stock and is in like-new condition: clean, crisp, free of damage, and finished with an even, smooth surface. As a result, it works just as well as a decorative object as it does as a functional piece.

Use it as a fruit or nut bowl, for bread or citrus, as a centerpiece on a table, or simply as a sculptural wooden accent on a sideboard. In the kitchen, it can still be used as a generous mixing and kneading bowl.
