Antique Japanese Wooden Pulley, 1890s
Imposing and sculptural object, originally used as part of a pulley system for water wells or for hoisting heavy loads – often in combination with buckets or baskets.
Dimensions: height 39 cm, width 27 cm, depth 24 cm.
This robust example, crafted around 1900, is made of dark keyaki wood (Zelkova), a traditional Japanese hardwood known for its strength and beautiful grain pattern. The metal ring bears traces of age, while the wood has developed a deep, rich patina that reflects decades of use.
Today, this pulley has lost its utilitarian purpose, but its aesthetic presence has only grown stronger. A striking sculptural piece that integrates effortlessly into modern, industrial, or wabi-sabi interiors. Perfect as a wall accent, tabletop object, or as a characterful detail in a contemporary space.
A unique piece of Japanese craftsmanship and history – raw, authentic, and full of character.
