Antique Japanese Loom Weights, Wooden Decoration, 1900s
Characterful set of eleven wooden loom weights from Japan, originally part of a traditional handloom. The weights are short and solid in shape, forming a compact, sculptural cluster when you stand them upright.
Dimensions per weight: height 21 cm, width 7 cm, depth 5 cm.
Each element is hand-carved from solid wood and pierced, then strung together with a thick, braided fibre rope. Decades of use have gently rounded the edges and given the wood a smooth feel, with small irregularities, colour variations and fine age cracks that reveal their history. The rope connection is visibly aged and slightly frayed – exactly what makes this piece so authentic and atmospheric.
Originally, these weights kept the warp threads of the loom nicely tensioned. Today they make a striking decorative object: beautiful as a compact bundle standing on a sideboard or low cabinet, or casually displayed like a wooden chain on a table or bench. In a studio, textile workshop or creative workspace, they instantly bring a tangible piece of Japanese craft history into the room.
An intriguing, timeworn object that effortlessly balances between art and utilitarian piece, and fits perfectly in an interior where authenticity and materiality are key.
