Authentic Japanese Tansu, Small Drawer Chest, 1930s

This compact Japanese tansu is a practical storage piece with just enough presence to work beautifully as a side table or display base as well.

Dimensions: height 37 cm, width 42 cm, depth 31 cm.

The cabinet has five drawers: two shallow drawers at the top for small items, two roomier drawers below, and one large bottom drawer for larger belongings.

The drawer fronts show a lively, attractive wood grain and are finished with dark, nicely patinated ironwork: sturdy corner protectors, handles, and round hardware plates on the larger drawers. One drawer still carries a remnant of an old paper label—an extra detail that adds character. Inside, the drawers are made in a lighter wood, with visible wear consistent with a piece that has truly been used and lived with.

Perfect today for storing papers, tools, textiles, or accessories, and equally strong as a styling piece—ideal for displaying ceramics, a vase, books, or art objects.
