Authentic Kendō Men (helmet), indigo, Japan, 1960–1970

Approximate dimensions: height 41 cm, width 19 cm, depth 25 cm.

What makes this piece stand out is the balance of materials and lines: the wide, softly draping “shoulders” in stitched cotton/indigo, paired with the crisp metal grid and its red lacquered interior. A light-colored leather trim frames the metal protection.

Inside, there is the maker’s label: 愛信製 (Aishin-sei), meaning “made by Aishin”.

In good, nicely worn condition.

As a decorative object, it works exceptionally well on a shelf, in a display cabinet, or as a sculptural accent in an interior with a Japanese or wabi-sabi atmosphere.
