Creative Kokeshi – Masayoshi Yamagishi, 1970s, Japan
A rare Japanese sōsaku kokeshi from the 1970s, attributed to Masayoshi Yamagishi, featuring a wonderfully playful design and irresistible kawaii charm.
Dimensions: H 19 cm × Ø 12 cm.
This handcrafted wooden kokeshi stands out for its large, rounded head and distinctive hairstyle. On either side, unusual pigtails are formed from a series of dark brown wooden beads. This original detail gives the doll its charming, almost fairy-tale-like character.
The deep red kimono is richly decorated with white Japanese plum blossoms and a finely patterned obi in warm shades of yellow and red.
The design is attributed to Japanese artist Masayoshi Yamagishi. The base bears a partially faded red artist's seal, making it impossible to confirm the attribution definitively.
In lovely vintage condition, with a natural patina and minor signs of age.
A rare and collectible kokeshi that beautifully reflects the artistic freedom of the Japanese sōsaku tradition.
With its distinctive silhouette and playful kawaii charm, it makes a striking decorative art object.
