Dance Katana with Spotted Lacquer, Buyōtō, 1960s, Japan
A striking Japanese theatre and dance katana (buyōtō) from the 1960s, featuring a richly decorated wooden scabbard and elegant traditional details.
Dimensions: H 84 × W 6 × D 8 cm.
The wooden scabbard (saya) is finished in deep black lacquer, decorated with a playful pattern of hand-painted ivory-white dots in varying sizes. The contrast between the dark lacquer, light-coloured dots and silver-toned metal fittings gives the sword its distinctive character.
The handle is traditionally wrapped in black cord over a light-coloured base and features copper details, including an elegantly shaped end cap with a natural patina.
The decorative handguard (tsuba) is made of dark metal and depicts a dragon in relief, surrounded by intricate openwork details.
The blade is made of plastic, reflecting its original purpose as a prop for traditional Japanese theatre and dance performances.
In vintage condition, with visible signs of use on the handle, lacquerwork and metal fittings. The natural wear contributes to its authentic appearance.
A distinctive decorative collector's piece, beautiful as a wall display or a striking accent in an interior.
This theatrical sword also makes an interesting addition to a collection of traditional Japanese katana, offering a different perspective on Japanese sword culture.
Supplied without the display stand shown in the photographs.
