Japanese Wooden Wall Panel, Antique Door Panel, ca. 1890

This antique Japanese door panel originally formed part of a piece of furniture and stands out for its restrained, serene construction.

Dimensions: height 87 cm, width 91.5 cm, depth 2.5 cm.

Broad horizontal rails divide the surface into calm planes and are enclosed by a solid wooden frame, giving the panel a balanced, architectural presence.

Over time, the wood has darkened significantly through age and use, revealing a rich palette of warm browns and deep blacks. Visible wear and subtle discoloration in the grain create a convincingly timeworn texture. On one side, the original metal lock plate remains—an honest, characterful detail that underlines the panel’s functional origin.

Thanks to its flat profile, this piece works beautifully as wall décor, but it is equally striking when simply leaned against the wall as a natural backdrop. It pairs particularly well with ceramics, sculptural objects, or a low display in a minimalist or wabi-sabi interior.
