Large Japanese Daruma, Decorative Statement Piece, 1980s
This impressive Daruma is a true eye-catcher: large in scale, bold in colour, and instantly recognisable thanks to its expressive gaze and traditional red-and-gold paintwork. With its full, rounded form, it works beautifully as a statement piece in an interior, retail space, or display window.
Dimensions: height 54 cm, width 48 cm, depth 38 cm.
In Japan, Daruma is a symbol of perseverance and good fortune. The figure refers to Bodhidharma, the monk associated with the origins of Zen Buddhism. Traditionally, a Daruma is purchased to mark a new intention or goal: one eye is painted in at the start, and once the goal is achieved, the second eye is added. This gives the object not only decorative appeal, but also a meaningful, ritual character.
This example is in very good condition, showing a few signs of use and small areas of wear consistent with its age, as visible in the photos. A rare large format that brings instant presence and energy—no explanation needed.
