Product Details

A Kyosoku is a traditional armrest for sitting on a tatami and also serves as a small table for placing a teacup. The top surface of this Kyosoku is adorned with Tsugaru-Nuri, a lacquer technique featuring a beautifully speckled pattern.

Dimensions: height 26 cm, width 50 cm, depth 18 cm.

Tsugaru-Nuri involves applying 48 drying base layers before painting the pattern layers. After applying multiple layers of surface lacquer and allowing them to dry, the pattern is revealed through sanding and polishing. The result is a stunning speckled pattern with depth and luster. The entire process can take over 60 days. Some refer to Tsugaru-Nuri as "the lacquerwork of the fool" due to the time-intensive nature of this type of lacquer work.
