Product Details

Japanese tanuki statue made of Shigaraki ware, dating from the Shōwa period, Japan.

The tanuki has a characteristic rounded form, a large hat and a pale belly, combined with dark brown-black glazes and warm earthy tones.

Dimensions: height 38 cm, width 26 cm, depth 20 cm.

The figure is richly detailed with several traditional elements and has developed a beautifully aged appearance over time. Visible signs of age and use suit the vintage character of the piece.

Tanuki are a well-known motif in Japanese folk culture and are traditionally associated with good fortune, prosperity and hospitality. A decorative and expressive example from the mid-Shōwa period.
