Japanese Kazaridana (Tana) Display Cabinet / Étagère, 1930s

This Japanese cabinet from the 1930s is a beautifully balanced piece, combining practical storage with open display space. It is a classic tana/kazaridana: a type of cabinet traditionally used to store tableware, lacquerware or tea utensils neatly behind doors, while showcasing favourite pieces on the open shelves. Thanks to its relatively compact depth, it also works very well in smaller spaces without compromising on presence or storage capacity.

The cabinet is made from dark hardwood with a warm, deep sheen and a calm, richly figured grain. The rounded uprights and slightly overhanging top rail give it a strong, architectural silhouette that still feels elegant.

The layout is clear and practical. At the top there is a closed compartment with four sliding doors, decorated with sakura (cherry blossom) motifs. On the lower left, a compartment with flap doors features floral and bamboo decoration—ideal for items you prefer to keep out of sight. Two wide drawers at the bottom provide additional, easily accessible storage. Three open display tiers with fine pierced details complete the piece, perfect for ceramics, glassware, books or decorative objects.

Condition: in good condition with light, normal signs of age and use. Sturdy and fully functional.
