Japanese Terracotta Haniwa Warrior in Tankō Armour, circa 1950
Distinctive vintage Japanese terracotta sculpture dating from around 1950, inspired by traditional haniwa figures from the Kofun period.
Dimensions: H 46 × W 23 × D 20 cm
The warrior wears a characteristic helmet and tankō armour, an early form of Japanese body armour. The detailed depiction of the riveted armour plates, the sword at the waist and the geometric decorations gives the sculpture an authentic appearance. The understated facial features and warm terracotta tones reflect the characteristic aesthetic of original haniwa figures, which were historically used as funerary ornaments and symbolic guardians.
An impressed maker's mark is visible near the base. A characterful Japanese sculpture that makes a striking decorative accent in a minimalist, wabi-sabi or contemporary interior.
Good vintage condition with minor signs of wear and natural irregularities consistent with age.
