Vintage Japanese Terracotta Haniwa Sentry, ca. 1950

Decorative Japanese terracotta figure in Haniwa style, dating from circa 1950.

Dimensions: height 36 cm, width 16 cm, depth 15 cm.

The figure represents a stylised warrior or sentry, inspired by traditional Japanese haniwa tomb figures from the Kofun period. It has a calm, serene facial expression, narrow open eyes, a headpiece and a frontal posture with the arms held close to the body. The rough terracotta surface and hollow interior beautifully echo the ancient haniwa form language.

Haniwa figures were placed on and around burial mounds in ancient Japan and had a ritual and protective function. Warriors and sentries symbolised protection, presence and vigilance.

Through outdoor use, this piece has developed a natural patina, with soft green tones, weathering and earthy colour variations. This gives the object a beautifully aged, almost archaeological appearance.

Today, it is above all a strong decorative interior piece. Beautiful on a pedestal, low cabinet or in a display setting, where it adds calm, serenity and a Japanese wabi-sabi atmosphere.

In lovely vintage condition, with normal signs of use and age consistent with its material and outdoor history.
