Imperial Hina Couple, Papier-Mâché, 1948, Japan
A richly painted pair of Hina figures depicting the Japanese emperor and empress.
Dimensions: each figure measures approximately 15 cm high, 15 cm wide and 10 cm deep.
The empress wears a kimono in red, orange and pink, adorned with small flowers and fan motifs. She holds a painted fan. The emperor wears a dark robe with floral motifs set within geometric panels, painted in soft blue-green tones and gold. The texture of the papier-mâché and the delicate brushwork give each figure its own character.
Both figures bear a red maker’s stamp on the underside with the name “Masami”. One stamp also gives the year 1948. Together, they bring a beautiful touch of colour to any interior.
In very good vintage condition, with light signs of age to the papier-mâché and paintwork.
