Organic Japanese Wooden Hibachi – Meiji Period, ca. 1910
This monumental hibachi was organically shaped from a solid trunk of keyaki (Japanese zelkova/elm) and rests on a base of sugi (Japanese cedar). The interior features its original zinc lining.
Dimensions: height 29 cm, width 80 cm, depth 75 cm. Weight: 36 kg.
The natural form of the trunk, with its soft curves and lively surface marked by time, gives this piece a serene and timeless presence. The warm tones and subtle craquelure of the wood embody the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic – celebrating the beauty of imperfection, simplicity, and nature.
Once used as a charcoal brazier for heating, this hibachi has now found a new life as an atmospheric and sculptural object in a contemporary interior. Perfect as a planter, low pedestal, or meditative centerpiece, it adds a quiet, grounding presence and a sense of harmony to any space.
