Old Japanese Wooden Kibachi Dough Bowl, 1959
Large old Japanese wooden dough bowl, also known as a kibachi or konebachi, dated 1959.
Dimensions: height 13 cm, diameter 52 cm.
The bowl is made from solid wood and has a wide, low shape with a generous open volume. The soft rounded form, thick raised rim and warm wood grain give the piece a sober, natural and highly decorative appearance.
The underside features handwritten Japanese calligraphy. The inscription mentions Shōwa 34, November 26, which corresponds to 1959. It also includes the name of the original owner.
This type of wooden bowl was used in Japan as a mixing or dough bowl, among other things for preparing and kneading dough. Today, it is above all a beautiful decorative interior piece: perfect as a large fruit bowl, for nuts, textiles, dried flowers, or simply as a sculptural wooden object on a low table, cabinet or counter.
The bowl has a timeworn appearance with normal signs of use and age, darker colour variations, small irregularities and an old natural opening or knot in the base. This gives the object extra character and an authentic wabi-sabi atmosphere.
A strong and atmospheric Japanese utilitarian object with a warm wood colour, beautiful bowl shape and quiet decorative presence.
