Red Chest of Drawers, Decorative Tansu, 1920s, Japan

A Japanese chest of drawers in warm orange-red, with a timeworn finish and dark metal fittings.

Dimensions: height 100 cm, width 99 cm, depth 43 cm.

Four drawers span the full width; below them, a taller wide drawer sits beside a smaller one. On the sides are two handles and a larger bracket formerly used with a carrying pole.

The top is a lovely place for a plant, an ikebana arrangement or a few carefully chosen objects. Its weathered colour and simple form bring a warm wabi-sabi feel to a contemporary interior.

In good condition, with normal signs of use and a few narrow gaps caused by the wood’s natural movement over time. All drawers are functional.
