Set of Japanese Ranma Panels with Birds, Wooden Wall Decor, 1930s

This set of two slim wooden ranma (transom panels) features openwork carving (sukashibori).

Dimensions: height 15.5 cm, width 179.5 cm, depth 2.5 cm.

The long, recessed panels show stylised birds in flight, combined with small branches and blossom accents. The warm reddish-brown wood and the subtle sheen of the aged patina create that calm, timeworn character you look for in original Japanese interior elements.

These ranma are finished on both sides. The carving reads just as beautifully from either direction, so you can mount them freely (choose your preferred “front”) or even use them as a room divider / see-through panel without any “back side” feel.

Traditionally, ranma were installed above sliding doors or between rooms to let light and air pass through, while adding ornament and rhythm to the architecture. Today they work especially well as a wall accent, above a passageway, as a statement piece over a low cabinet, or integrated into a wabi-sabi or Japandi interior. They’re striking displayed as a pair, but also strong when used separately to break up a wall.
