Vintage Japanese Wooden Fumidai Step Stool, 1950–1960
This vintage Japanese wooden fumidai has a narrow, tall form with two steps.
Dimensions: height 57 cm, width 41.5 cm, depth 26.5 cm.
The open arched cut-outs on the sides and the simple construction give the piece a graphic, almost architectural presence.
Fumidai were traditionally used as wooden step stools in Japanese homes and shops. This example has a warm honey-brown wood tone, visible grain and natural signs of use that give the object a rich, lived-in character.
Today, it works beautifully as a decorative step stool, small display piece or styling object for ceramics, books, plants or a small ikebana composition. Its height and open form bring subtle verticality to a sober or eclectic contemporary interior.
In good vintage condition, with signs of use and natural ageing consistent with age and use.
