Vintage Japanese Kendo Bōgu with Display Stand, c. 1970–1980

Decorative vintage Japanese kendo equipment, or bōgu, presented on an adjustable metal display stand, presumably dating from around 1970–1980.

Dimensions: adjustable height from approx. 144 cm to max. 165 cm, width 53 cm, depth 75 cm.
Weight: approx. 26 kg.

The set consists of traditional kendo protective equipment, including the men, the helmet and face mask with metal grille, the dō or chest protector, the tare around the hips and the kote gloves. The combination of dark textile, leather, cords, lacquered elements and weathered metal gives the piece a strong, timeworn presence.

The blue metal stand forms a practical and sculptural base on which the armour is beautifully displayed. Thanks to the adjustable height, the set can be presented as a full silhouette, giving it the presence of a stylised warrior figure.

Kendo is the Japanese martial art of sword fighting, and this type of bōgu was worn for protection during training and sparring. Today, this set works especially well as a decorative object, collector’s piece or statement piece in a Japanese-inspired interior, dojo, retail space, gallery or large entrance hall.

The equipment is in good vintage condition, with normal signs of use and age, including wear to the textile, leather, lacquer and metal, consistent with its age and original use. Offered as a decorative and collectible object.
