Vintage Kokeshi "Hōshu" by Yūsa Fukuju – Japan, 1960s
This refined kokeshi doll, titled Hōshu (宝珠, meaning “Sacred Jewel” or “Treasure Pearl”), was crafted in the 1960s by master artisan Yūsa Fukuju (並佐福寿), a respected kokeshi maker from Naruko — one of Japan’s most renowned regions for traditional kokeshi craftsmanship.
Dimensions: height 24 cm, diameter 6 cm. In excellent condition, complete with original box and documentation. Signed on the base.
The doll stands out for its elegant, minimalist expression and the unique motif on its body — a stylized design symbolizing a sacred treasure or pearl. The finely carved head and the warm, naturally polished wood lend the piece a serene, almost meditative quality.
This particular doll was awarded a prize at a national craft competition, as indicated by the original packaging and accompanying certificate.
The box features a beautiful pattern and a paper label with calligraphy noting its provenance and the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award — a rare detail that enhances the value and authenticity of this collectible piece.
A truly special and rare item for collectors of Japanese folk art and design.
