Rare Japanese Suzuribako Calligraphy Box, 1870–1890
A rare Japanese wooden suzuribako, or calligraphy box, dating from the early Meiji period.
Dimensions: height 21 cm, width 20 cm, depth 30 cm.
This compact writing box is constructed as a small wooden chest with a hinged lid, iron fittings and narrow drawers at the front. Inside, there is space for calligraphy tools, brushes, ink, paper or small documents. The internal layout and visible signs of use clearly show that this piece was used functionally over many years.
The wood has a deep reddish-brown colour, with old black paint marks, worn edges, scratches, discolouration and a beautiful aged patina. Traces of paint, ink and daily use are also visible on the inside and on the lid, giving the object a strong sense of character and authenticity.
Originally used for Japanese calligraphy, this piece now works beautifully as both a decorative and practical interior object. It can be placed on a desk or low table, for example to store writing materials, small documents, jewellery or other personal items.
