Japanese Matcha Chawan in Kohiki Style, 1950s
This generous Japanese matcha bowl has an elegant, open shape with a gently flaring rim and a solid, low foot ring.
Dimensions: height 7 cm, diameter 14.5 cm.
The glaze is clear and glossy, with a soft two-tone composition: a milky white upper area transitioning into a cooler grey-toned band below. Across the surface, fine speckling in the clay body and a subtle crackle network add depth and character.
The finish aligns beautifully with Kohiki: a white slip layer beneath a transparent glaze, creating that distinctive powdery, soft white surface so appreciated in the tea ceremony. Inside, five small unglazed dots are visible—these are stilt/spur marks, the traces left by the supports used during firing.
An ideal chawan for matcha thanks to its wide opening (easy whisking) and comfortable volume, but equally appealing as a small serving bowl for dessert or as a calm, sculptural object on a shelf.
Condition: good condition, with light signs of use and natural crackle typical for this type of glaze.
