Antique Japanese Bamboo Basket with Red Lacquered Rim, 1930s

Highly decorative antique Japanese basket, dating from the 1930s, handwoven in bamboo.

Dimensions: height 57 cm, diameter approx. 35–37 cm.

The basket has an elegant cylindrical shape. The weaving is finely and rhythmically constructed from narrow bamboo strips in warm brown and honey tones, with a beautiful natural patina created by age and use. The base is round and concentrically woven, beautifully emphasizing the handcrafted character of the piece.

Particularly striking is the red lacquered upper rim, made as a sturdy bamboo ring and secured with traditional binding techniques. Over time, the red lacquer has worn beautifully, showing areas of wear, darker accents and exposed sections that give the object an authentic wabi-sabi presence. The combination of warm woven bamboo, the red rim and the visible hand-bound details makes this basket much more than a functional object.

Originally, this type of basket was used for storage, transport or domestic use. Today, it works beautifully as a sculptural interior accent: as a tall basket for textiles, branches, dried flowers, umbrellas, or simply as a decorative object in its own right.

The basket is in beautiful antique condition, with normal signs of age, wear to the red lacquer, small irregularities and natural patina consistent with age, material and use.

A warm and authentic Japanese object from the early Shōwa period, with a strong graphic form and exceptional decorative presence. Beautiful in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, rustic, minimalist or eclectic interior, and particularly striking as a high-end decorative accent in an entrance hall, living room, shop interior or curated gallery space.
