Product Details

A striking Japanese kadai, a tall wooden plant stand or decorative pedestal, made as sotsugyō seisaku: a graduation project from the Heisei 6 school year, 1994.

Dimensions: height 79.5 cm, width 37 cm, depth 37 cm.

The pedestal has a hexagonal shape and is built from separate wooden panels with hand-carved relief decoration. Around the entire piece, different motifs are carved: fish, birds, mammals, insects, flowers and prehistoric animal figures. The combination of naïve forms, handcrafted carving and warm orange-brown wood gives the piece great charm and character.

The lower panels feature Japanese inscriptions, including a reference to “graduation work, Heisei 6 school year”. Names of the students who contributed to the project are also included.

Today, this kadai works beautifully as a plant stand, a pedestal for a ceramic pot, a tall display for a sculptural object or as a playful accent in an interior. Its vertical form gives a plant or object immediate presence, while the carved panels reveal something different from every angle.

In beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of use, light scratches and wear consistent with age and use. Solid, decorative and highly original.

Shipping & pickup: pickup in Antwerp possible; worldwide shipping on request.
