Small Japanese Fude Tansu, Calligraphy Drawer Chest, 1900s
This small Japanese drawer chest is a rare, characterful example of a traditional calligraphy or writing cabinet, in Japan often referred to as a fude tansu. Originally, this type of tansu was used to keep writing and calligraphy tools neatly organised: brushes, ink, paper, seals and small utensils each had their own place.
Dimensions: height 30 cm, width 25 cm, depth 36 cm.
The cabinet has 6 drawers in different sizes, from narrow, shallow drawers to deeper compartments at the bottom. That layout still makes it extremely practical today: perfect for hobby supplies, sewing tools, jewellery, small collectibles, keys, office essentials, or as a compact organiser on a desk, in a studio, or within a shelving unit.
The wood grain and surface show a beautiful, timeworn patina with honest signs of age that add warmth. The iron pulls and lock plate underline the restrained, functional tansu character. As visible in the photos, there are also old repairs and traces consistent with its age and long use over time, including discoloration and possible ink marks.
It may not be “perfect”, but that is exactly what makes it so authentic and compelling—an atmosphere you simply can’t recreate.
