Kokeshi ‘Mushin’ by Watanabe Masao – Japan, 1960s
This kokeshi is a significant design by Watanabe Masao, one of the most influential kokeshi artists of the 20th century.
Dimensions: Height 30 cm Base diameter 7.5 cm The base is hand-signed and bears Watanabe’s distinctive red name seal (hanko).
In the 1950s, Watanabe began experimenting with new forms and expressions within the medium, playing a pivotal role in the development of sōsaku kokeshi – the modern, creative interpretation of traditional kokeshi dolls. His dolls are known for their minimalist shapes and facial expressions that consistently evoke a universal sense of mushin (無心) – innocence or serene emptiness. His work has received multiple awards and is part of the permanent collection of the Toy Museum in Nuremberg, Germany.
