Low Tansu Chest of Drawers, Wabi-Sabi, c. 1900, Japan
A beautiful low Japanese tansu from the Meiji period, featuring deep reddish-brown tones, a rich dark patina and exceptionally decorative wrought-iron fittings.
Dimensions: H 52 × W 104 × D 42 cm.
The chest features two spacious drawers and three smaller drawers. Two of the smaller drawers were originally concealed behind a wooden door. This door is no longer present, making the drawers directly accessible.
The large drawers feature elegant iron handles with richly shaped backplates, decorated with stylised, cloud-like motifs. The iron corner reinforcements and original carrying handles on both sides reflect traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
The wood displays warm reddish-brown nuances, darker tones and natural signs of age that give the piece its distinctive appearance.
In beautiful, authentically aged condition.
A versatile and decorative storage piece, with a wide, low top that is ideal for displaying bonsai, ikebana, ceramics or art objects.
An atmospheric wabi-sabi accent that brings warmth and character to a contemporary interior.
