Low Tansu, Wabi-Sabi Storage Cabinet, c. 1890, Japan

A beautiful low Japanese tansu from the Meiji period, featuring a deep reddish-brown finish, rich patina and exceptionally decorative wrought-iron fittings.

Dimensions: H 45.5 × W 104 × D 42 cm.

The chest features two spacious drawers, each fitted with two metal handles. The elaborate lock plates are particularly striking, displaying finely detailed reliefs with stylised animal and nature motifs. The dark ironwork creates a beautiful contrast with the warm wood tones.

Both sides retain their original metal handles and fittings for carrying poles, once used to transport the chest.

The wood displays a beautifully aged patina with natural signs of use.

In lovely, authentic condition. Supplied without a key.

A highly decorative and practical storage piece, with a wide, low top that is ideal for displaying bonsai, ikebana arrangements, ceramics or art objects.

A beautiful wabi-sabi accent for a contemporary interior.
