Product Details

A highly decorative old Japanese bamboo fish trap, also known as an uke, dating from the 1960s.

Dimensions: height 140 cm, diameter 28 cm.

The trap is handwoven in bamboo and has a tall, tapering cylindrical form with an open lattice structure. The weave combines wider and finer bamboo strips, with a narrow pointed top and an airy inner construction that is beautifully visible from both ends.

Originally, this type of bamboo trap was used for catching fish or eel. Today it works especially well as a sculptural decorative object, displayed upright in a Japanese, wabi-sabi, rustic, natural or eclectic interior.

It is also striking as a hanging ceiling object or, with an internal light fitting added, as a unique lighting element that creates warm shadow patterns through the open weave.

In very good vintage condition, with normal age-related wear and traces of use consistent with its age, material and original function.

A characterful Japanese folk object with a strong vertical silhouette, natural texture and great decorative presence.

Shipping & pickup: pickup in Antwerp possible; worldwide shipping on request.
