Dimensions: H 14.5 × W 15.5 × D 9 cm

Pair of Japanese ceramic Shisa figures dating from around 1980, finished in a warm brown glaze with subtle colour variations and a soft sheen.

Shisa are traditional guardian figures from Okinawa, inspired by the mythical lion-dog. According to local folklore, they ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune and protection. They are often placed in pairs at the entrances of homes, temples and other buildings.

The figures feature expressive faces, richly detailed curly manes and elegantly raised tails. Their detailed modelling and warm earthy tones give them a lively, handcrafted appearance.

A characterful decorative pair that can be displayed together or individually on a sideboard, bookshelf or in a Japanese-inspired, wabi-sabi or eclectic interior.

Good vintage condition with minor signs of wear and small irregularities in the glaze consistent with age.
