Unique Theatre and Dance Katana, Buyōtō, 1960s, Japan
A decorative Japanese katana from the 1960s, made as a prop for traditional theatre and dance performances.
Dimensions: H 90 × W 6.5 × D 7 cm.
The wooden scabbard (saya) features a dark, subtly textured lacquer finish, accented with silver-toned metal fittings. The handle is carefully wrapped with cord over a light-coloured base and finished with elegant decorative details.
A striking feature is the richly decorated handguard (tsuba), depicting a dragon surrounded by stylised wave motifs. A black fastening cord (sageo) is attached to the scabbard, traditionally used to secure the sword to a belt or obi.
The blade is made of plastic with a silver-coloured finish. Visible wear and areas of flaking to the finish reflect its use as a theatre or dance prop.
A characterful piece of Japanese performing arts heritage, combining refined details with a distinctive decorative appeal. Beautiful as a wall display or as an addition to a collection of Japanese art and cultural objects.
In vintage condition, with visible signs of use on the blade and minor age-related wear to the remaining components.
Supplied without the display stand shown in the photographs.
