Product Details

An impressive Japanese sōsaku kokeshi from the 1960s by award-winning artist Sadao Kishi (1932–1998).

Dimensions: H 60 cm × Ø 13 cm.

This remarkable wooden kokeshi is based on Kishi’s celebrated design ‘Mushin’, also known as ‘Spirit of Wheat’. Its sculptural silhouette combines a large, rounded head with an elongated central section and a separately shaped base. Delicately carved ears of wheat decorate both body sections, reflecting the artist’s appreciation of nature and Japanese harvest traditions.

The design received the Japanese Prime Minister’s Award at the 10th All-Japan Kokeshi Competition in 1968. The underside bears a calligraphic signature, a red artist’s seal (hanko) and an inscription referring to this competition.

In beautiful vintage condition, with a rich golden-brown patina and gentle signs of age that enhance the natural character of the wood.

With its exceptional height and refined design, this highly collectible kokeshi is a striking sculptural piece that brings warmth and character to a stylish contemporary or eclectic interior.
