Old Japanese Bamboo Harvest Basket / Zaru, ca. 1950–1960
Decorative old Japanese bamboo basket, dating from circa 1950–1960.
Dimensions: height 23 cm, diameter 53 cm.
The basket is handwoven in bamboo and has a round, slightly flared shape with an open geometric weave. The broad bamboo strips, sturdy wrapped rim and cross-shaped reinforcement on the underside give the piece a strong, handcrafted appearance.
This type of open bamboo basket was traditionally used as a zaru or harvest basket, for collecting, sorting, airing or drying natural materials.
Today, it is above all a beautiful decorative Japanese object. It works well as a bowl for textiles, paper goods, dried flowers or small objects, but is also particularly striking as a natural wall accent or displayed on a low cabinet, table or pedestal.
The basket is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of use and age consistent with its material and original function.
A characterful Japanese utilitarian object with rich texture, natural presence and a strong wabi-sabi appeal.
