Set of Five Japanese Bamboo Drying Trays / Zaru, 1930–1950
Decorative set of five old Japanese bamboo drying trays, also known as zaru, dating from the first half of the 20th century.
Dimensions per piece: diameter 45 cm, height 3 cm.
The trays are handwoven from bamboo and natural fibres, with an open geometric lattice and firmly wrapped edges. This type of tray was traditionally used for drying, airing or sorting natural materials such as leaves, herbs, flowers or harvested produce.
With their understated round form, aged fibre texture and graphic woven structure, they now have a beautifully decorative presence. They work especially well as wall decoration, either individually or grouped together, and fit naturally into a Japanese, wabi-sabi, rustic, country or eclectic interior.
The set is in authentic vintage condition, with normal signs of age, wear, small irregularities and natural traces of use consistent with age, material and function.
A warm and atmospheric set of Japanese folk objects, where simplicity, craftsmanship and natural texture come together beautifully.
